Journal 1 Music History

Hello my name is Kelly Coughlin, I have been listening to music my entire life. As early as I can remember I would listen to oldies music on 93.9 and 100.3 fm. Or when we were in the car we would also listen to the music my mom and dad listen to such as Styx, Chicago, Journey, and much much more. This was only the beginning of musical influence in my life.

When I was in early grade school I remember singing in music class during grades k-2 and it continued into 3-5, I believe I was in choir from grades 2-5. We had the same music teacher all these years. She was very influential with my singing and taught me the basics. When I entered Junior high, music was really no more about singing but just learning. I was in the choir then my 7-8 grade years. I realized with that joy I got at my younger age music was in my life.

High School though changed my life. I was in the intro choir my freshman year followed by sophomore year I was in Womens Concert Choir and last but not least junior and senior year Mixed Concert Choir. Each level was completely different and got much more challenging. Besides just the classes I took private music lessons during my lunch hour from sophomore – Senior year. Also when I was a freshmen I was in something called show choir and my groups name was NOVA. Even though I was picked just to help the first year I still sang the music and helped set up and take down during competitions. Then the other 3 years I was in the group right out there on stage performing the best that I could possibly do. Also on top of class, lesson, and show choir, I was apart of our musicals. I was in 3 of the 4 musicals during high school. My senior year we did Cinderella and I was casted as the evil step mother. All these thing in high school will certainly stick with me the rest of my life.

On my free time I will listen to my Ipod or even if I am out I plug in my Ipod. I have over 3200 songs on my MP3 player along with movies and some tv shows. Within my Ipod I have every type of music genre in there except Rap. That is the only one that I rarely ever listen to because I don’t really like it. But besides just my ipod, I own over 200 cd’s from way back when, when I was growing up before MP3’s began coming out. My favorite on though would happen to be Country. I have a few groups/ artists that I listen to the most and have been to a few of their concerts. These artists and groups would be: Taylor Swift, Tim Mcgraw, Faith Hill, Shania Twain, and Rascal Flatts. I have seen some of these people perform multiple times. These occasions have been my favorite. I happen to listen to my ipod almost on an everyday basis if possible.

This first week back at school was interesting, it was nice to go into a room during music class and have basically a nontraditional class. I have never had a class like this and this makes this even more fun then I expected. Two of the activities that I found interesting was where we would at first walk in a circle and then stop and be directed to do something and then start up again. Then the second day we got out of the circle and did the same type of thing. Then the name game song we did with the little money was very fun because like little children we needed to get out of our comfort zone and work to learn every ones names and faces. The chant that we sang helped a lot because like little ones we didn’t remember it at first but then as time went on and the more repetition we learned it and sang along. These 2 activities are important to children in the fact of at a young age they don’t like to be alone and they need some help. We demonstrate for them and they will learn. They will then feel more comfortable for even them to speak up at learn more about things. Then with the name game they will catch on fast and come out of their shell they may have and begin to make friends. Going into a new place and a new environment for little ones isn’t easy and maybe with this name game It will help out profusely.
